Positioned strategically on the curve of the Iowa River, the siting gives the boathouse a vantage point from where boats can be viewed gliding at speed through the water left and right up the sweep of the river.
A blend of three red SwissPearl colors was used to provide a maintenance-free, long-lasting façade.
Beckwith Boathouse is home to the UI women’s rowing team, the largest Hawkeye women’s team, the men’s club rowing team, and the Old Capital Rowing Club, a community-based rowing club. Named in honor of Sue P Beckwith, MD, it is the first UI building named solely for a woman benefactor.
The 20,000-square-foot LEED-certified building features an efficient geothermal heat pump system and daylight harvesting.
