Louisiana Children’s Museum
The Louisiana Children’s Museum took nearly thirteen years to build, delayed by the devastation of Hurricane Karina. The museum, an important element of the New Orleans City Park Master Plan, extends amenities for families across the region. It was designed as a new model for children’s museums. It provides a wide variety of ways to explore artistic, sensory, and natural environments and is located on the doorstep of children living in one of our country’s most underserved regions.

“This project exemplifies a resilient way of living with water in a place that is continuously challenged by its proximity to it. The project design finds a way to be simultaneously immersed in a natural setting while being in a part of a city,” noted the WASLA 2022 Top Ten Awards jury. “The design does everything: being a modern vernacular form that is spatially rich and meets the triple bottom line of social well-being, environmental health, and a just economy.”
Most of the two museum buildings are clad in durable Swisspearl high-density fiber cement architectural panels. They selected a blend of two Onyx colored panels with the Swisspearl CARAT finish. CARAT panels have a translucent, lightly pigmented finish. Like all Swisspearl cement composite panels, CARAT panels are through-color. Swisspearl panels help to ensure minimal maintenance on the building exteriors and enable them to withstand harsh weather conditions and salt air. In addition, the CARAT panels with the factory-applied “HR” coating provide anti-graffiti projection, extra UV protection, and scratch resistance.
